Today's Erkelenz District Court was finally born on October 1st, 1879. The District Courts were established with the Courts Constitution Act that came into force on that day. The new district court was brought under the former district command of the Prussian military administration, today the "Seniorenheim Residenz", on Aachener Strasse and, together with the Wegberg district court, assigned to the district of the Mönchengladbach regional court and the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.

This is also the location of the "Aachener Tor".
