The cloister of the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey was built in the 13th century and is one of the most impressive areas of the monastery complex. It served the Benedictine monks as a place of rest, prayer, and connection between the various monastic buildings. The slender columns of granite and limestone create a harmonious interplay of light and shadow. It is striking that the cloister is not located in the middle of a courtyard, as in many monasteries, but was built on the highest level of the abbey.
