You should take your time for a tour of the museum. In addition to the history of the house, there are also changing special exhibitions.

From 1682 to 1692, Duke Bernhard I had Elisabethenburg Castle built on the site of the Meiningen city castle built by the Bishops of Würzburg as the future residence of his dynasty. It was named after his second wife, Duchess Elisabeth Eleonore from the house of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, who was also one of the initiators of a cultural life at the Meininger Hof. As part of the former city castle, the so-called Bibra building - although architecturally modified - has been preserved as the north wing of the "Elisabethenburg".

The main entrance to the palace is on the city side and leads through a circular building into the courtyard of the baroque three-winged building complex. This castle area, formerly the domicile of the ducal administration, has housed the municipal administration center since the destruction of the Meiningen town hall in 1945. In the lovingly landscaped courtyard, surrounded on all sides by the stately palace facade, the visitor imagines himself in a different world, far away from the street noise and everyday stress.

Elisabethenburg Palace is one of the absolute highlights in Meiningen. You'll need time to explore its many rooms and halls, with all their history, paintings, and stories.

        It's definitely worth a visit!
