The crypt chapel stands in the English Garden as the former burial place of the ducal house of Saxony-Meiningen.
October 5, 2023
Bernhard II of Saxony-Meiningen had the senior building officer A.W. Doebner build a burial place in the English Garden for the ducal family. The church of St. Martin stood at this point until it was demolished in 1827. In the area around the crypt chapel you can still recognize the area of the old, now abandoned cemetery by some baroque and classical tombstones. It was used as the main burial site from the early 16th century until 1841. In 1977 the coffins of the people of the ducal family who were buried here were removed, the remains were cremated and anonymously buried in the Meiningen Park Cemetery. In 1989 they were reburied in dignified resting places in the park cemetery.
Construction details: neo-Gothic hall, purified in 1977; Vault with 16 coats of arms from the Saxon main coat of arms; once colored glass windows, destroyed in a bomb attack in 1945; Exhibition on the history of the English Garden, which is opened sporadically on weekends during the summer months
