It is the oldest baptistery in Ravenna, built between the late 4th and early 5th centuries and completed under Bishop Neon, after whom it is named.
The building has an octagonal plan, a symbol of the transition from earthly life to spiritual rebirth in baptism.
The interior is famous for the large mosaic on the dome, which depicts the baptism of Christ in the Jordan River, surrounded by the apostles arranged in a circle.
It is part of the eight early Christian monuments of Ravenna inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
