The mausoleum was built in 520 on the instructions of the famous Gothic king Theoderich as a separate tomb. The monument consists of two ten-cornered floors made of Istrian limestone. Its roof is a monolith, crowned by twelve engraved curvatures bearing the names of eight apostles and four evangelists, and weighing approximately 230 tons. The bones of the Arian Theodoric were removed in 561, however, when the mausoleum was turned into an oratorio and dedicated to the Orthodox religion.
