The little church is on Via Corrado Ricci, in the historic center, and it's not easy to spot. It was built in Baroque style by Antonio Serri between 1748 and 1750 based on a design by the Camaldolese father Fausto Pelliciotti da Lucca (? -1752), author of a number of furnishings in the Classense library.

The building was built on or near an earlier church that appears in some documents from 1076 called Santa Maria in Luminaria or delle Luci.

The church, which is preceded by a small courtyard and a gate, is also called "adoration", always alluding to Maria Magdalena, the evangelical figure who washed the Lord's feet with tears and wiped them with his hair, and rises today above street level.

The brick facade then opens to a small, single-nave interior, and among the baroque decorations, the church houses paintings by the most famous painter of the 18th century, Andrea Barbiani (1708-1779), such as Sant'Apollinare and San Romualdo, The Virgin, Antonio da Padova and Francesco di Paola, whose brother Domenico Barbiani (1714-1777) helped design the facade and the baroque apse.

Also from the 18th angel), by Tommaso Sciacca (La Magdalena in the Pharisee's house) and Filippo Pasquali (The Savior who appears to Magdalena in the form of a gardener).

The main altar is decorated with oriental marble, including a flowery alabaster with a peacock eye, which comes from a column from the mausoleum of Theodoric. The ciborium by Giulio Costa rests on the altar.

In this church, which is open all day and all night, the eternal adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place with a large participation of the faithful.
