The so-called "Palace of Theodoric" actually dates from the 7th or 8th century. It was probably built during the reign of the Byzantine exarchate on Ravenna and must have originally served as a guard house. In fact, it is equipped with a narrow hall on the upper floor, which extends the entire length and which is accessed by a scalar tower at the rear of the building. Through various modifications, as early as the ninth century, the structure in front of the adjoining church of S. Salvatore ad calchi, which has now disappeared and whose name is perhaps derived from the original guard house, seems to have become an ardica (portico) at the entrance to the palace of Constantinople, called Chalke, (with the mighty fortified 'bronze' doors). The remaining buildings of the church are built on the ruins of the imperial palace complex, formerly Roman. then Gothic, Exarchal and Lombard, which were created in various excavation and restoration campaigns in 1870 and then between 1907 and 1914 in the area and whose marble remains and mosaic floor fragments have largely been preserved in the upper room, which is open to the public.
