The Avenida da Liberdade is a model of Paris Avenue on the Champs-Elysées oriented boulevard in Lisbon. It begins at the Praça dos Restauradores and connects the lower city (Baixa), built after the earthquake of 1755, with the upper districts of the north, and continued from the beginning of the 20th century on the Avenidas Novas.
With its palm trees and over one hundred year old plane trees, the geometric patterns of the pavement and the elegant shops, the Avenida remains one of the great streets in Europe, despite some transformation problems.

In the last few decades, numerous older buildings, including valuable ones, have been demolished in the wake of the economic boom and replaced by new buildings by financial institutions and hotels. So also the former picturesque trams from a line of the Lisbon Metro that opened in 1959.
