The Carthusian Monastery of Herne was founded in 1314, making it the oldest Carthusian monastery in the Netherlands. In the Middle Ages, it played an exceptionally important role as a center for translation and book production.
Most of the monastery buildings were demolished in the early 19th century (cellar, church, guest quarters, refectory, and chapter house). The prior's house from 1716 and the brick barn from 1705 are the only surviving examples.
