The Morozov Merchant House in Gorokhovets is the work of the legendary Gorokhovets carpenters, the "yakushi," and a striking example of residential construction from the early 20th century. Designed in the "Russian" style with Art Nouveau elements, the house's exterior resembles a fairytale tower. Ivan Shorin, founder of the Gorokhovets Shipyard, commissioned this building in the early 20th century. He later gifted the wooden mansion to his son-in-law, the merchant I.P. Morozov. The building's appearance reveals elements of Russian style and Art Nouveau. A stained-glass window has survived in one of the rooms.
Currently, the building, with its wooden carvings and turrets, houses the "Marfa Posadnitsa" Museum of Technical Thought. Its exhibition explores the development of handicrafts and folk traditions in the Gorokhovets district. "Marfa Posadnitsa" is the name of the world's largest oil tanker barge, built at the Shorin Boiler and Shipyard in Gorokhovets.
The interior decor is remarkably well-preserved: tiled stoves with relief motif cartouches, massive double doors decorated with carved panels, parquet floors, and stucco ceilings.
In the Morozov House's living room, you can see furniture crafted over a century ago by master woodcarvers.
The historic interiors house an exhibition at the "Marfa Posadnitsa" Museum of Technical Thought, which reflects the development of industry in the Gorokhovets District and the district's most widespread seasonal industry of the 19th and early 20th centuries—boilermaking. Here you will learn that in 1907, the world's largest oil tanker barge, "Marfa Posadnitsa," was built in a small merchant town.
