The house was built in the late 17th century by the merchant Matvey Oparin. Built in the ancient Russian tradition of stone architecture, the building stands on the banks of the Klyazma River directly opposite the Annunciation Cathedral.
A distinctive feature of the Oparin House is its massive porch, which juts out significantly and rests on powerful supports reminiscent of the columns of the Annunciation Cathedral. According to legend, the house's red porch originally faced the city, but the Annunciation Cathedral, built by Yershov, separated the house from the city center. The owner then moved the porch to the opposite side of the house, thereby deliberately turning away from the cathedral, making the red porch clearly visible from the river.
Unlike other merchant houses of this period, the house has undergone few changes and retains almost its original appearance.
In 1783, the house was sold to the Zbrodin merchants, and in the late 19th century, it changed hands several times, the last of which were the Selina merchants.
Between 1980 and 1982, the Oparin chambers were restored. Currently, the Oparin (Selina) house houses government offices, including the Civil Registry Office.
