After the Nordstern colliery was closed, the site was renovated in 1993 and turned into a landscape park. It is part of the Industrial Heritage Route. In 1997 the Federal Garden Show took place here.
Here you can find the former mine buildings, a climbing rock, a mining tunnel, and Hercules, an 18 meter high sculpture by Markus Lüpertz and much more.

The Nordsternpark is located on the site of a former colliery in the middle of the Ruhr area and is very different from other large parks in the area. The Emscher and the Rhine-Herne Canal run through the middle of the Nordsternpark. Some of the bridges that cross these two bodies of water are exceptionally constructed. Much is reminiscent of the closed mine that once shaped the region so much. Here is an old winding tower, there the coal bunker at the old canal port of the colliery. Foundations of cooling towers, today overgrown with roses. Hedges mark tracks with points, large trees cut into square shapes, long freight trains. There is shady green from trees, but also colorful flower beds. All of this lies in a hilly landscape that is still partially characterized by the old tailings dumps.
