Behind this simple second-floor window, a drama unfolded that profoundly influenced European history: the Second Defenestration of Prague on May 23, 1618. Under the leadership of Heinrich Matthias von Thurn, representatives of the Protestant estates threw the imperial governors Jaroslaw Borsita, Count of Martinitz, and Wilhelm Slavata of Chlum and Koschumberg, as well as the chancellery secretary Philipp Fabricius, about 17 meters into the castle moat. All three survived, one of them with a head injury.
The Second Defenestration of Prague marked the beginning and trigger of the Thirty Years' War and represented an important turning point in European history.
