The great city fire of 1787 destroyed almost the entire city of Neuruppin. King Friedrich Wilhelm II had the city rebuilt in the early classical style. In gratitude, the citizens of Neuruppin erected a monument to the rebuilder of their city. Schinkel presented a draft in 1825, which was accepted by the Neuruppin city council.

Hiking
The monument to Frederick William II was dedicated by the citizens of Neuruppin to the former King of Prussia for his efforts in rebuilding the city after the Great Fire of 1787. It stands prominently in Neuruppin's city center on Schulplatz (School Square), opposite the Old Gymnasium (grammar school). The original monument by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Christian Friedrich Tieck was unveiled on August 26, 1829. The current sculpture of Frederick II is a replica of the original.
