The Alt Ruppin lock is located at the southern end of the Molchowsee in an approximately 250 meter long lock canal. The Rhin was made navigable in 1787/88 by the construction of the Alt Ruppin lock and the Altfriesack lock, among other things. The reason for the expansion of the waterway was on the one hand the removal of the Linumer peat and on the other hand the transport of the building materials required for the reconstruction of the town of Neuruppin, which was destroyed in a town fire in 1787.
