When rebuilding his business building (the building next to the current clock location) after the Second World War, master clockmaker Wilhelm Nonhoff wanted to embellish the facade with a world time clock including a carillon. He developed the clock mechanism himself, and the external design was taken over by the architect Heinrich Benteler. The clock was inaugurated on November 26, 1950. However, this was only possible with a trick: an apprentice moved the clock by hand every minute, as the actual mechanism was not (yet) working.
