Michaelisplatz is reminiscent of the Michaeliskapelle, which was located in the east gate of immunity. This gate was demolished in 1778. Bishop Burchard had built it together with the stone wall around the cathedral immunity. The chapel in honor of St. Michael above the gate was probably consecrated in 1112.
