This is the heart of the historic Hanseatic city. Since the 12th century, merchants and traders built permanent houses in this area adjacent to the cathedral precinct and offered their wares under the arcades. The ensemble of 48 arcaded houses with their Gothic or Renaissance gables was largely destroyed in World War II. Reconstruction revived the old styles, sometimes faithfully replicating them, sometimes in a simplified, modern style. Today, a large part of city life takes place here: state guests are received, festivals are celebrated, and people stroll, shop, and enjoy life.
