This bridge over the Rhine – which not only connects the two opposite cities of Mainz and Wiesbaden, but also the two federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse – is named after Theodor Heuss (1884 to 1963). After the Second World War, the liberal politician helped shape the new constitution (Basic Law) in the "Parliamentary Council" and served for two terms as the first Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, founded in 1949.
