Stylistically, the Electoral Palace is one of the last buildings of the so-called "German Renaissance". The north wing, which was built later, is in keeping with this style. The exterior, with its bay turrets on all corners, is decorated with rich architectural decoration (especially on the windows). It was restored to its original state, including the roofs. Inside, there was once a large main staircase by Balthasar Neumann, which was removed during French rule.

The Electoral Palace in Mainz is the former city residence of the archbishops of Mainz, who as such were also electors and sovereigns of the Mainz electoral state.

Although the palace was built in the Baroque period, it is uniquely characterized by the mannerist forms of the German late Renaissance. Burned down in 1942, the palace was rebuilt in 1948. The facades of the Electoral Palace with their characteristic decorative elements were repainted in the original red in 1990.
The permanent exhibition of the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in the palace is unfortunately permanently closed and is expected to reopen its doors elsewhere in 2024. More information at web.rgzm.de
