The Viamala region
Flat passes and deep gorges: the topography of the valleys around the Viamala made the area a popular transit route early on. That has not changed to this day.
story
The topic of transit runs like a red thread through the Viamala region. Early evidence such as the Carschenna rock carvings or the Cresta settlement in Cazis prove that people passed through this area thousands of years ago.
In Roman times, the Splügen Pass was an important corridor for transporting goods and troops from south to north and vice versa. Evidence of this is the Tabula Peutingeriana, a copy of a Roman traffic map that shows a route between Chiavenna and Chur. There are also numerous archaeological sites in the region, such as the Zillis cult cave.
