St. Wilhardi Church: For centuries, the slightly overhanging, massive, square west tower of St. Wilhardi Church, together with the slender tower of St. Cosmae, has dominated the Stade skyline and is popularly known as the "Leaning Tower of Stade."

St. Wilhardi Church had a Romanesque predecessor from the 11th century, which was probably the first archiepiscopal church built. In 1063, Stade became a spiritual fief of the Archbishops of Bremen. The name itself clearly indicates the connection to Bremen, as Saint Willehad was the first bishop and founder of the Bremen diocese. Foundation remains of the first St. Wilhardi Church were discovered in 1986 during the construction of a new heating system.

The current three-aisled Gothic hall church dates from the 14th century. The oldest part of St. Wilhadi Church, however, is probably the west tower, which stylistically points to the late 13th century as the construction period.
