The water levels in Stade are regulated via three locks at the Salztor, at the old port at the fish market or at the Backeltrog/Schiffertor, at low and high tide as well as from the incoming rainwater from the hinterland of the Stader Geest. Without these sluices, there would be wet feet or full cellars in the old town. The lock times of the Salztorschleuse – Stade depend on the tide. From 1875 to 1925, the Salztor lock served as a flushing lock.

Since 1792, the upper reaches have been separated from the tidal river by the sluice at the Salztorschleuse; The lower reaches of the Schwinge begin, which flows into the Lower Elbe at Stadersand northeast of Stade at Elbkilometer 654.8.
From the Elbe to the Salztorschleuse in Stade, the Schwinge is a 4.6 kilometer long federal waterway, class IV for the first 700 meters to the saline loading point, and class II from then on.

Six kilometers from the Elbe River, on the edge of the Geest ridge, lies the Hanseatic city of Stade. The first port, the Hanseatic Port, was a bend in the Schwinge River leading into the old town. During the industrial age, this port became too small, so the city harbor was built directly outside the city in 1882. Since the 1980s, it has lost its appeal to cargo shipping. Today, it is primarily a marina for recreational boats and home to the historic ships "Greundiek" and "Wilhelmine von Stade."
