The Walplein is a beautiful cobblestone square in the heart of Bruges. Numerous restaurants and bars invite you to take a break.

The name of this small cobblestone square likely refers to the first city wall, built in 1127-28. In addition to offering cozy terraces under the trees, Jef Claerhout's artwork "Zeus, Leda, Prometheus, and Pegasus Visit Bruges" is an ode to Bruges' coachmen. Breweries were located here and in the surrounding area until the 16th century. Today, this is home to the only active brewery in the city center: the "De Halve Maan" brewery, founded in 1856 by Leon "Henri" Maes and now run by the sixth generation. The specialties of this brewery are the Brugse Zot, Bruges' city beer, and the Straffe Hendrik, which is appreciated both at home and abroad.
