Gamber means "to bob."
Rafting on the Kinzig at that time required a special damming technique.
The water was collected at the weirs, which then carried the large rafts down the valley. The construction for this was a beam resting on a base that could be swung in the direction of the water flow. By bobbing, or "gamben," this beam, the boards were released from the weir. This created an opening through which the rafts could eventually navigate.
