Be sure to climb the stairs. A wonderful view of the Rhine plain, the Palatinate Forest and the Northern Vosges compensates for this and is the highlight in the truest sense of the word.

You will be rewarded richly when you climb the 120 steps onto the platform: from the lookout tower on the 481 meter high Stäffelsberg you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views in the southern Palatinate far into the Rhine plain, over to Alsace, in the Palatinate Forest, with good visibility to the Black Forest and the Vosges.

The predecessor of the present tower, built in 1887, was demolished by the French military government in 1947, as the 15-meter-high sandstone tower also served military purposes. The teacher Josef Knieriemen, based in Dörrenbach, had made the construction of this first Stäffelsberg tower worthwhile.

The Dörrenbacher were, of course, not satisfied with the loss of their tower: Near the old place built in 1964 Dörrenbacher Heimatbund a new, 21 m high round concrete tower. Almost half a century later, this interior and exterior was thoroughly renovated and embellished. The reopening of the tower celebrated the people in a big, happy ceremony on 1 May 2012, exactly 125 years after the first laying of the foundation stone.

The view is great, you should take a pair of binoculars. For each direction is an orientation template attached.
