A lonely little chapel sits enthroned at the top of the mountain. The extension originally housed a hermit's apartment. Today it is privately occupied and, unlike the chapel, not open to the public.

The hermitage was inhabited by hermits as early as 1658 and continued until 1900. It seems as if that's still the case, except that nowadays - in the age of the internet and telephones - people probably don't call anyone a hermit anymore.

In the 19th century, the hermitage was a popular destination for wealthy spa guests in Aachen, including prominent representatives of the European aristocracy.

"In the Klauserwäldchen nature reserve, a path with seven wayside shrines (the clay reliefs show representations of the Seven Sorrows of Mary) leads to the former hermitage with the chapel »Maria im Schnee« (Maria ad nives).

The small whitewashed quarry stone building shows a coat of arms and the inscription "Frere Toma Larondel, Eremit Anno 1658" in the wedge stone above the round-arched entrance portal.

In the early Middle Ages, a monastery was surrounded by several small church buildings, creating a "church family". In the vicinity of the former Benedictine Abbey of Kornelimünster, in addition to the chapel "Maria im Schnee" in the hermitage, there are also the mountain church of St. Stephen, the Antonius chapel and the two St. Gangolfs chapels and St. Nicholas chapels, which are no longer used today.
