The Gothic St. Nicholas Church in Onstwedde, located in the municipality of Stadskanaal, was built around 1500. The Juffer Tower, more than 41 meters high, is at least a century and a half older than the church. Onstwedde, like the rest of Westerwolde, belonged to the Diocese of Osnabrück until 1568. Secular authority lay in the hands of the Prince-Bishop of Münster.

According to recent research, the church was dedicated to Jacobus de Meerdere, who appears on several parish seals. In 1475 or 1476, Sunte Nicolaus der hilgen patronen tho Unswede is mentioned, a saint who also appears on the Westerwolde seal from 1402. However, this may have been a confusion with Vlagtwedde. It is unlikely that the church was originally dedicated to Nicholas, as the veneration of Nicholas only arose in the 12th century, by which time the church of Onstwedde had probably already existed.
