The area around Ter Borg was formerly known as 't Börger Hammerk; the hamrik (neighborhood) around Ter Borg. This area west of Ter Borg was not suitable for agriculture and consisted mainly of vast heathlands. In the 1930s, a large part of the heathland was planted mainly with conifers to be able to use these 'wastelands' unsuitable for agriculture as production forest. This production forest was eventually designated in the seventies as the Ter Borg nature reserve.
