Throughout East Groningen, from Ter Apel to Bad Nieuweschans, many streams have been restored to their original, natural course over the past few decades. The forests, meadows and fields in the Ruiten Aa river valley look the same today as they did when they shaped the landscape around the Westerwolder Angerdörfer. It quickly became apparent that the renaturation measures were also good for the flora and fauna. In spring, the landscape is in full bloom, Lakenvelde cattle graze on the pastures, kingfishers and great egrets appreciate the fish-rich waters, and the stork that has already disappeared from Westerwolde has returned.
