The Sendlinger Tor is one of three surviving city gates of Munich's Old Town, which were built in the course of the second city expansion in the early 14th century. At Sendlinger Tor, a piece of the medieval city wall has been preserved, which ran in the direction of Duke Wilhelm Street. Today, the Sendlinger Tor separates the old from the Isarvorstadt. It also marks the beginning of the pedestrian zone and shopping area, which extends to Marienplatz.

The southern city gate of the historic old town at the end of Sendlinger Strasse was built as part of the second extended city fortification around 1300. However, the large central arch was built shortly after 1900, for reasons of traffic technology.
