The Devil's Staircase is exactly that... great for hiking, non-rideable for most bike riders (talking of the most experienced riders here on a good day). Makes for a great hike-a-bike though and it still beats riding the busy car invested asphalt road if you ask me. Wide tires needed for the descent on the other side of the mountain!

The Devil's Staircase is somewhat legendary in mountain biking circles. If you skills and fitness are totally on point, it's mostly all rideable - although most mortals will likely see more than a little pushing to reach the cairns at the top.

From there, though, there's a fantastic descent with a few spicy technical features to keep you entertained, from water bars to rocky outcrops to steppy sections.

A brilliant slice of trail. It can get quiet walker-y though, especially in the summer - but if you start early you can avoid most of them.

Don't venture past this point without the right bike. I basically ended up pushing/carrying a gravel bike up the entire climb and much of the descent. I'd struggle to see how any bike can tackle some parts of it to be honest.

There are stone channel drains traversing the entire route every 10-30 metres and though many can be done on a gravel bike on the descent, there's plenty of rim bashers in there too where the width is a bit of a risk.

That said, I picked the right day for the wrong route. The weather was gorgeous and the views were the best I've ever seen whilst pushing/carrying/riding this bike.

Had a great time. Wouldn't repeat it.
