The Bavarian Forest National Park was founded on October 7, 1970 as the first German national park and since its expansion in 1997 has covered an area of over 24,000 hectares. This makes it the largest German national forest park and, together with the Bohemian Forest, forms the largest contiguous forest area in Central Europe. Through the establishment of a national park, the aim is being pursued worldwide to preserve as much original parts of the landscape as possible as a national natural heritage for future generations. Visitors thus have the chance to get to know nature, which is largely unaffected by humans, and to experience it for themselves.
