The occurrence of the European Wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) in the Bavarian Forest has been extinguished for almost 170 years; However, as part of the photo trap monitoring, wild-colored cats have been observed in the national park area for five years with increasing frequency. According to experts, these animals show all the external characteristics of real wildcats, but a clear genetic detection was still pending. With the use of valerian baited bait sticks, it was now possible for the first time to collect hair samples that were unequivocally identified as wildcat hair by the Department of Wildlife Genetics of the Senckenberg Museum. According to the German Red List, wild cats are considered endangered, in Bavaria they are threatened with extinction.
