The main church St. Jacobi is located in the center of Hamburg on the Steinstraße. This was one of the main streets of early Hamburg; today it is dominated by the office buildings of the 20th century.
St. Jacobi emerged from a chapel on a Way of St. James. Therefore the church was consecrated to the apostle James. At the first mention in 1255 St. Jacobi was still outside the secured city east of the Heidenwall. Only after the extension of the city wall in 1260, she was involved in the Hamburg city fortification.

The St. Jacobi Church is one of Hamburg's five main Protestant Lutheran churches. Despite many changes throughout history and massive destruction during the Second World War, the church is one of the few remaining medieval buildings in the city center. It is a protected cultural property according to the Hague Convention.
