The Brietz ponds are now an Eldorado for wading and waterfowl, dragonflies and amphibians. The former "clay ponds" to the west of Salzwedel, which were created by clay mining, have been remodeled in a natural way since the late 1990s. The result is a valuable wetland for migratory and breeding birds with excellent living conditions for meadow and reed breeders - such as Marsh Harrier, snipe and water rail.
