Today, the Brietz ponds are an Eldorado for waders and waterfowl, dragonflies and amphibians. The former "Ziegeleiteiche" west of Salzwedel, which were created by clay quarrying, have been redesigned to be more natural since the late 1990s. A valuable wetland biotope has emerged for migratory and breeding birds with excellent living conditions for meadow and reed breeders such as marsh harriers, snipes and water rails.
