The Jeetze flows through Salzwedel and used to be an important transport route. There was also a harbor. Thus Salzwedel received the Hansrecht in 1263.

The Jeetze is a typical lowland river in the landscape of the "Western Altmark Plateau" with sandy-gravelly to sandy-mudgy bed substrates, which in many places is accompanied by one-sided riparian woodland, reed beds and moist perennial meadows. Grasslands dominate in the surrounding areas. Within the villages, the stream is regularly built up and anthropogenically over-shaped. Several weirs, bed slides and dams artificially regulate the water levels.
