Philipp Ludwig was born in the Hanau City Palace on November 18, 1576. He attended the Pädagogium and the Academy of the High School in Herborn, then the University of Heidelberg. At the age of 19, he took over the rule (still under guardianship) and completed numerous study trips through Italy and the Netherlands. In 1596, he married Catharina Belgica, a daughter of William of Orange. "PLII" is known as the founder of Hanau's New Town (1597), the second Hanau Jewish community (1603), and the High State School (1607). He built the City Palace and reformed the count's administration (1612) to prepare his country for the future. The settlement of Walloon and Dutch religious refugees, as well as the Jewish community, was essentially a massive economic development program. The monument erected in his honor, created by sculptor Professor Max Wiese in 1897, depicts him as an "elder statesman" with a well-groomed beard and in state robes. Looking at the portrait, it's hard to believe that Philipp Ludwig II died at the age of only 36. Rather early, like his predecessors and successors, from a hereditary disease or simply from influenza. After a grand farewell ceremony on September 23, 1612, the arguably most important Count of Hanau was buried in a copper coffin that is still in excellent condition.
