Along the dikes in the area of Sint Maarten, small lakes have formed due to various dike breaches. Where holes were punched in the dikes, the swirling water masses formed deep pools. These so-called wheels were too deep to drain or fill in. After a dike breach, a new section of dike was therefore constructed around the resulting hole.
