Like the Cologne and Münster gates, the medieval Bachtor in Zülpich covers a road that was essentially Roman. This is a route from Zülpich to Neuss, which bypassed the metropolis of Cologne to the west, as if it were a bypass of the "Agrippastraße". Leaving the city, it ran almost straight, initially along the left bank of the Neffelbach to Kerpen-Blatzheim and from there to Bergheim-Thorr, the ancient Tiberiacum. Farm roads and the B 477 from Vettweiß-Gladbach trace its course fragmentarily to this day.
