In 1931, during civil engineering work in Zülpich, it was discovered that the ancient city had long had what the modern city was just beginning to set up: a sewage system. This belonged to a well-preserved Roman thermal bath complex, which was hidden under the museum forecourt. A protective structure built above it at the time was considered to be in danger of collapsing since the end of the 1990s. Demolition and new construction made it possible to set up a "Museum of Bathing Culture" with the thermal baths as the centerpiece. It opened in 2008.
