After the Roman period, fountains were for a long time the only way for the residents of Zülpich to get fresh water. The nearest watercourse is the Langendorfer Fließ outside the city walls, which has little water. Some of the fountains have been preserved in their original form; for example, the large city fountain on the market square or the Quirinus fountain behind St. Peter in and above the Roman baths. Other house fountains are still marked on city plans from the 19th century. These only became obsolete with the introduction of the local water supply network in 1887.
