The original church was one of the important medieval sacred buildings in the city, but it was destroyed over time and not rebuilt later. Today, the memorial site marks the historical location and makes the past of the place visible again in the cityscape.
The complex serves primarily for commemoration and historical remembrance. Information boards and design elements explain the significance of the former church and its role in the city's history in Magdeburg.
