The Rhine island lies between Hartheim on the German side and Fessenheim on the French side. The Old Rhine borders the east bank of the island, which faces the German side - and the Grand Canal d'Alsace on the west bank - which faces the French side. The narrow section of road, which is only about 1 km long, is rarely used by cars and is rather untypical for the area in terms of landscape and very attractive. This so-called dry floodplain was created by deep erosion after the Rhine was straightened by the civil engineer Tulla. It provides a habitat for some rare to very rare plant and animal species.Sources
