The pond is bordered by rustic stones and has two islands: one accessible by a bridge and the other exclusively for birds. On the accessible island is the Pavilion of Alfonso XII, a small Neo-Moorish-style temple where, according to legend, King Alfonso XII declared his love for María de las Mercedes.
