Jean Mottart was born in 1931 and was one of the key figures in the cultural and political life of the current merged municipality of Nerem. He played an important role in numerous associations as chairman or board member. After the merger with Tongeren he was also a member of the municipal council and in 1987 he died at the age of 56. In gratitude, the Christian Employees' Union - Nerem took the initiative to set up a walking path named after him. The walk starts in the Tongeren sub-municipality of Nerem.
