A picnic spot to dream away at the historic Mira Bridge.

This bridge is more than a bridge. This bridge is a great story. The Mira Bridge was originally not even called Mira Bridge, but Three-part Metal Truss Bridge with Rotatable Middle Section (also known as: Hamme Bridge). Admittedly, Mira Bridge sounds a lot better. But how exactly did this bridge get its name?

Well, the culprit is Willeke Van Amelrooy. And Jan Decleir. And also Hugo Claus, Fons Rademakers and Stijn Streuvels. In 1971, they cobbled together the iconic feature film Mira or the Loss of the Waterhoek. A film that turned the Low Countries upside down.

The conservative straitjacket was expertly bombarded with spicy nude scenes - and even a tuft of pubic hair from the leading actress. Murder and arson, shouted the common people. Finally liberated, shouted the youth. It heralded the beginning of a new chapter in cinema and in society as a whole. From then on, a lot was possible. And the headwind that raged over our regions died down completely over time.

Let's rewind: how did that bridge actually get there, in the first place? Well, it was built at the end of the 19th century and has endured a lot in its long history.
