The wooden bridge over the Chemnitz River was already in existence around 1470. The gate provided access to the city.
The area around the Pfortensteg (Portrait Bridge) was an important economic center in the 14th and 15th centuries. Mills, lye and dye houses were located here. Most important, however, were the nearby meadows for bleaching.
The Pfortensteg was and remains one of the shortest pedestrian routes from Kaßberg to the city center. Via the Gerichtstreppe (court steps) and the Pfortensteg (Portrait Bridge), you can reach the town hall from Hohe Straße in just a few minutes.
