St. Jacob's Church experienced something of a rebirth after World War II. The city's second-oldest church dates back to the 14th century and is located in the city center, directly behind the Old Town Hall.
Both buildings are among the few sites that today constitute historic Chemnitz – although they were severely damaged in the final days of the war in March 1945. In St. Jacob's Church, the vaults and pillars in the nave collapsed.
The neo-Gothic interior was destroyed as a result.
The nave was reconstructed between 2004 and 2009.
